Chapter Ten: Rescued at Last

Samuel stepped over to the table, bending to come face to face with Shane. His hands inched closer to Shane, stopping in front of his fingers. The warmth of the necklace grew on Shane’s chest to levels it had never before. It didn’t like Samuel.

“Try me,” Samuel whispered.

“I really… I… I don’t know.”

“I highly suggest that…”

Samuel stopped speaking. His mouth hung open trying to finish his sentences. His eyes widened in awe. Staggering back away from the table, he mouthed a couple of words that Shane couldn’t understand and collapsed to the floor.

The interrogation room had grown warmer, warmer than the necklace. The familiar red glow filled the room as Lilith came into view. Without saying a word, she draped a red silk cloth over the necklace and scooped it up. She placed a hand on Shane’s shoulder, pulling him through a window of darkness.

Shane’s head spun as colors of green, blue, and red swirled around him. It felt like he was walking through a vortex tunnel. The pain was still in his head, adding to the miserable trek he was being forced through. He felt the world blinking out of view again when the lights changed. In seconds, he was sitting in the living room of his hotel room. He bounced to rest on the couch with a sigh. The spinning stopped and his head had a moment to catch up.

Lilith stood next to the windows. From the looks of it, it was morning again. Shane must have been out for a few hours. He rubbed the knot on his head and was happy to find that the swelling was going down and his touch didn’t hurt. Lilith glanced over at Shane, a sparkle in her eye.

“You’ve had quite the day. I thought you had tried to run away and I was getting ready to end you, when I heard you got arrested.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t apologize. You have already done better than any of the other men I have asked to take on these series of tasks. How was it?”

“The climb or being arrested?”

“Both.”

“The necklace caused the building to shift like it was trying to knock me off.”

“Yeah. They tend to be tricky that way. When not on the same person, the two energies will often work against each other. I suppose I should have warned you about that, but you do better when left to your own devices. Now, how did you manage to get yourself arrested?”

“I thought you said you were always with me.”

“Through the necklace, but I don’t always see everything you do. I have my blind spots, as I told you before. What did you do?”

“I forgot and opened the roof access door. I would have escaped, but I fell and hit my head.”

“That’s why you didn’t take the ride home so well. I’m sorry. If I’d known, I would have blocked out the ride.”

Lilith stepped over to Shane and placed her hand over his head where the bump was healing. A tingling ran across his scalp, causing him to shiver.
